Stated second edition on titlepage but dated 1829 (ie same year as first edition) Complete in three volumes. 8vo (195 mm); [ii], 318 + [308] + [ii], 328 pp. Full tan calf with double labels lettered in gilt to spines which have been divided into six compartments by raised bands. Edges of boards and tips of corners slightly rubbed. With the bookplate of Sir Robert Johnson Eden laid down inside the front cover of the first vol together with dealer ticket of T&W Boone of New Bond Street, London. A handsome set. Gleig served in the War of 1812 and the Peninsular Wars, going on half-pay after the Battle of Waterloo to return to studies in Oxford. In 1820 he took orders, turned to writing, becoming a frequent contributor to Fraser's Magazine, where The Subaltern had first appeared. By 1832 he was Chaplain to the Chelsea Hospital, whose patients are to this day fondly referred to as "Chelsea Pensioners". Wolff 2571 | Block, A. p.84.
