Large 8vo (10 x 7 ins); pp xv + 486. Illustrated throughout by George Reid, including frontispiece and to verso of list of illustrations. Decorated with publisher's device to verso of half-title and endpiece vignette. Bound in half red morocco, gilt, over red boards by Morrell, binding signed at top left corner of verso of front free endpaper. Spine divided into compartments by raised bands with decorative gilt. All edges gilt, with an exquisite fore-edge painting of Edinburgh Castle atop its mound. Blue marbled endpapers. Tops of corners lightly knocked, very slight bits of rubbing to extremities, still a fine copy of a handsomely bound history of Edinburgh with a very fine fore-edge painting of the city. Margaret Oliphant (1828-97) was a Scottish novelist and travel writer. The books is illustrated by Sir George Reid (1841-1913), Socttish portrait and landscape artist known also for his brushwork views of Edinburgh and pen drawings.
