Chatwin's bleak novel set in the hills of Radnorshire on the border between England and mid-Wales. It tackles various themes including unrequited love, sexual repression and confusion, social, religious and cultural internalism. The book was voted winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for 1982.
