Signed Presentation copy with handsome inked inscription to first free endpaper dated "Christmas 1903". First Edition. 8vo. pp xv, 279; folding map at the rear ("Southern part of British Columbia"), seven illustrated plates and one vignette. Original pale brown buckram board with gilt impression a figure on horseback holding a hunting rifle. Gilt title lettering to front and spine. Original black endpapers. Ends of spine slightly rolled. A near fine copy. A enthusiastic account of a journey across Canada in the company of her husband, Algernon St. Maur, 15th Duke of Somerset. Most of the journey was undertaken by train, with numerous pauses en route, and there are vivid descriptions of Canadian life and culture of that time. Noted as a generous philanthropist and supporter of many charitable causes she was much decorated in her lifetime: Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, Medal of the Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra Nurses Institution, the Belgian Queen Elisabeth Medal, the French Médaille de la Reconnaissance, the Italian Medaglia Benemeriti Croce Rossa, the Serbian Red Cross Order, and the Spanish Red Cross Merit Order.
