First Edition thus of Charles Dickens' Christmas novella first published in London in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech. It tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. This copy has the wonderful Searle dust-jacket and numerous illustrations in b/w and colour. including the endpapers, all by Searle, which help captures the full flavour of this ghost story of Christmas. Original red cloth boards, with circular gilt floral device to upper and gilt lettering. A small one-inch section has been snipped out from the front flap of the jacket where the price was shown. No old inscriptions.
