Handsomely bound in contemporary full calf, double filets to sides, ornate gilt spine with raised bands and double morocco labels. Ends of spines a touch shelf rubbed, tips of corners mildly bumped. All edges marbled, also pastedowns. Inked owner's inscription to front endpapers in vol I, dated 1848. A most attractive set. Abridged translation of an influential history by German historian Ranke. Translated by Sarah Austin, who played a key role in familiarising the English-speaking world with contemporary German writers and thinkers, most notably Goethe and Ranke.
