First Edition, originally issued as two volumes, now bound as one in later half calf over marbled boards, double gilt rules to spines with title lettering blocked in gilt. Crown 8vo (7.5 x 5 ins) pp [xviii], 325 + [vi], 346, [2] Both titlepages present but only the half-title in vol I. Six engraved portrait plates including two frontispieces, as called for, four with tissue guards. Presentation inscription from the author, "with the author's compliments" on the half-title. Apart from light tanning to outer areas of the plates and the initial tp, this is an extremely clean and fresh copy in an attractive later binding.
