Medium 8vo (9 x 6 ins) Handsomely bound in red half calf over cloth boards, spines divided into six compartments by five raised bands, with titles in gilt lettering and floral ornaments in each section. Top edge of the pages gilt. Large closed tear across the title-page in vol II. Previous owner's unobtrusive address stamp inside front covers on both vols. Some light shelfwear to ends of spines and tips of corners. A most attractive set. John Morley, 1st Viscount Morley of Blackburn was a British Liberal statesman and journalist. He was Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1886 and between 1892 and 1895, and Secretary of State for India between 1905 and 1910 and again in 1911. Having failed to gain the seat in Blackburn in the 1869 he was elected as Liberal MP for Newcastle-upon-Tyne at a by-election in February 1883.
