Stock No. 14216
Authors: Charles, DICKENS
London : Chapman and Hall 1850
Early edition bound in half calf over marbled boards, black title label lettered in gilt to spine with ornamented gilt bands. Frontispiece from a drawing by Frank Stone. Half title present. Crown 8vo (185 mm); xvi, 496 pp with text aligned in double columns. Edges and corners tips slightly rubbed. Yellow binder's ticket of G. Mann, 39 Cornhill, laid down to rear pastedown. An attractive copy of this early edition of Chuzzlewit, originally published in parts between 1842 and 1844 and considered the last of Dickens's picaresque novels. Never one of the major Dickens novels, contemporary novelist George Gissing felt that it displayed "incomprehensible weakness of story".
