Smauel George Phear (1829-1918) was born in East Stonham Rectory, Suffolk. He was a clergyman of the Church of England, graduated from Cambridge University in 1852 and was appointed a Fellow of Emmanuel in 1853. Having achieved the positions of Bursar and Senior Tutor at Emmanuel, he was made Master in 1871. He served as Chaplain to Harold Browne, Bishop of Winchester from 1873 to 1881 and was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1874 to 1876. In 1859 he was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London. Evelyn Ansell's first world war diaries were turned into a book by his grand-daughter, Meryl Moore, called I Embarked for France: The War Diaries and letters of an English family in the Great War.
