Authors: Robert, CHAMBERS (1802-71)
London & Edinburgh: W. & R. Chambers, 1869
Later edition of much revised classic, first published 1823, with the 1868 introduction, focusing on "the romantic things connected with Old Edinburgh". Handsomely bound in full green morocco with rather fancy gilt decoration including a circular impression of the castle atop of its mound to front and back boards, wide decorative margins, turn-ins, compartmentalised spine with sprays and titles. All edges gilt. A related letter re James Court tipped in to front endpaper mentions a connection to the writer's family and the use of the building as "let out at reduced rent to poor persons". With the large, armorial bookplate of Brigadier R.V.G. Horn. 8vo (7.5 x 5.5 ins); pp xvi, [1], 12-389; several engraved vignettes in the text.
A very handsome copy indeed.
