BAWDEN, Edward (1903-89) | CAROLINO, Pedro (original text by) SKU: 19795

Number 127 of a Limited Edition of 200 copies issued. Oblong format in near fine condition with just the merest rubbing to points of corners. Free from inscriptions or any other internal markings. Pages clean and fresh with no foxing and no signs of wear and tear. Profusely decorated chromolithographed illustrations throughout by Edward Bawden, with the drawings reproduced from Edward Bawden's sketch-book, hence the shape and size of the book. To avoid spoiling the drawings, the captions have not been printed on the illustrations themselves, but at the beginning of each section. All printed tissue-guards unfoxed and uncreased. Bawden's linguistic train wreck of an English phrasebook for Portuguese speakers, which first appeared in Paris in 1836. Of it, Mark Twain noted "nobody can add to the absurdity of this book, nobody can imitate it successfully, nobody can hope to produce its fellow; it is perfect."

A near fine copy.
