Large 8vo (240 mm); [xxxii], [3520 pp; Portrait cameo frontispiece of the author, another photo-gravure portrait (of Sir Alfred Jones), two coloured plates, and a folding map of "the alligator shooting ground". Original red cloth, with front lettered in gilt and with gilt emblem, also gilt lettering to the spine which is a touch faded. Top edge of the pages gilt, fore-edge spotted with foxing, also to prelims and half-title and scattered elsewhere though mainly marginal. With contemp. inked inscription to front free endpaper, dated January 1907. A near Fine copy. A detailed study of the history, commerce, relilgion and social aspects of Jamaican society, with a chapter on notable book on Jamaica including those in the British Museum and book on the natural history of the island. Caine was the son of the novelist and poet Thomas Henry Hall Caine (1853-1931), travelled to the West Indies, and notably writes of the major Jamaica earthquake of 1907.
