Jarvis's translation illuminated by the illustrations of Doré. Quarto. pp. xxviii + 737; about 60 illustrations including many full page examples. Bound in chocolate brown half-calf with black morocco title label to spine set between raised bands, gilt. Half-title present, titlepage printed in red and black. Light foxing spots to front endpapers and half-title, repaired tear to pxiii. Page edges polished pink. A door-stopper of a book in lovely condition. The Charles Jervas translation appeared posthumously in 1742. Through a printer's error, it came to be known, and is still known, as "the Jarvis translation". It was the most scholarly and accurate English translation of the novel up to that time & became the most frequently reprinted version until about 1885.
