Complete in four volumes. 8vo (24 x 16 cms); pp. xlviii, 723 + [iv], 730 + [iv], 700 + [iv], 751. Half-titles present, titlepages with illuminated initial caps in red for the W and S of the author's name. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Shakespeare with his signature printed below. Bound by Bickers in half-calf over marbled boards, spines divided into six compartments by ornate gilt fillets and raised bands, with author name, volume number, and titles of each play in gilt, edges slightly rubbed but ends not chipped or split. Frontis and tp in v1 rather spotted and with offsetting, further spotting to endpapers in v4, while those of 2 and 3 without spotting. A most handsome library state.
In addition to all the plays, volume 1 was a chronological life of Shakespeare, details of his will, the dedication prefixed to the first folio of 1623 and some comments on the portrait of Shakespeare. At the end of the volume is an index "verbal and sentential glossary". Volume 4 contains six poems at the end: Venus and Adonis, Lucrece, Sonnets, A Lover's Complaint, The Passionate Pilgrim, and The Phoenix and the Turtle.
