Largely autobiographical, Superstar is the story of Gloria, a convent-educated aspiring artist who escapes the strictures of her existence for New York City. There she falls for a famous artist referred to as A. and his circle of of outrageous, beautiful avant-garde acolytes, transvestites, boy toys, and hangers-on. Gloria is thus reborn, undergoing a transformation from sheltered young innocent to sexual athlete, film star, and media flashbulb.
