First Edition. Medium 8vo (9 x 6 ins); pp xx, 651, [1]; four coloured plates, after W.C.P. Medlycott, and eight engraved plates (behind guards), mostly after P. Edgerton-Warburton, and numerous engraved illustrations in the text; two folding maps, one showing routes in the Holy Land the other the Dead Sea. Publisher's green cloth boards with bevelled edges and a bright gilt vignette of an man on horseback with spear. Patterned spine and title labels, both of which are partially chipped off. Contemporary gift inscription in period ink hand to first free endpaper. Boards slightly scuffed and tips of corners a touch bumped. A VG+ copy. The author spent ten months in 1863-64 studying the geology and natural history of Palestine particularly the basin of the Dead Sea and the districts east of Jordan.
