Crown 8vo (180 mm); iv, 426, (2) pp; engraved frontispiece with clear tissue guard and an extra, illustrated, titlepage; original blue sand-grained cloth, gilt, spine worn at head and tail, tips of corners worn, a touch shaken. On the fep is written following missive, dated 1962: "This book was given to my by our cousin Louise Perks of 42 Sydney Bldgs, Bathwick Hill, Bath. It belonged to her mother (who was a friend of the authoress) grt Auntie Louise Perks the sister of our grandfather Arthur Perks. Miss Charlesworth was a close friend of our grt grt grandfather William Perks and also his son John Brianjohn Perks of Rotherhithe where the Perks lived in a large Georgian house on the river front. Miss Charlesworth stayed with them there for a sale of work of "the Ragged Schools" by which the Perks, particularly William Perks, was deeply involved and interested". Christopher Perks 5/2/62. Also inscribed by Maria Charlesworth "Louise Perks, with the author's love March 10th 1864" and underneath the following lines written in her hand "Walk in Love, As Christ also hath loved us". Also inscribed on a further endpaper, again in the hand of Ms Charlesworth,"Presentation copy, from the author".
