First Rackham Edition. Original green illustrated endpapers, Frontispiece border and tissue-guard tanned, owner's name to reverse of front free endpaper, a few minor spots of foxing to margins. A VG+ copy of the fairy tale popularised in the 19th century by the Brothers Grimm. For this version of the adored tale of the humble sister who "shall go to the ball", Charles Sedon Evans, a schoolmaster turned publisher, used the main features of the story as told by Charles Perrault - the pumpkin coach, the mice horses, the rat coachman, the lizard footmen and the glass slipper - but expanded it to a full-length story in order to allow Arthur Rackham maximum opportunity to illustrate each stage of the drama with his masterful silhouette drawings.
