THELWELL, Michael SKU: 20485

First UK Edition. Original yellow cloth with the pictorial dust-jacket, excellent and unclipped, designed by Tony Seago. 400 pages. No old inscriptions or other internal markings. A fine copy. Novel based on the exploits of the Jamaican folk hero and reggae star Ivanhoe "Rhygin" Martin. Thelwell recounts Rhygin's path from a morally coherent rural universe to the teeming, urban chaos of downtown Kingston, where his rebellion against the poverty and corruption of post-colonial Jamaica, drives his simultaneous rise to the top of the charts and the Most Wanted list. The book is a reworking of the 1972 movie of the same name, starring Jimmy Cliff in the lead role, and supported by a reggae soundtrack that spawned numerous hits including the title song. Thellwell, a Jamaican, was founding chairman of the Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
