First Edition, first printing. Publisher's stippled dark green boards, unworn and unhandled, with bright gilt titles; square and tight block; no rubbing or bumping to sharp corners, not any shelf wear to lower edges of boards; gentlest rolling to spine ends; faint flecking to text block, with lightest offsetting to endpapers; no old names or inscriptions. Near fine first edition with the very good, original dust-jacket, designed by Kenneth Farnhill, which is not price-clipped (16s. net) and is unrestored, with some losses to edges, corner folds and ends of spine. The book was published in a tentative and small first printing in January 1963. Its unexpected popularity and critical success obliged the publisher to print a second impression in April of the same year.
