First Edition, first printing, preceding the American edition by four months. Publisher's original burgundy cloth with silver title lettering to spine. With the striking dust-jacket, by Fritz Wegner, showing a naked woman sprawled face down on a bed with a bottle of wine and two glasses on the bedside table. Jacket is well rubbed at head of the spine, much less so at the foot, also rubbed along top edge joint and corner tips. Original price on front flap has been obscured by black marker pen. Book without any spotting to page edges, also without old inscriptions etc. A fine copy in the VG+ jacket. The sixth in the series of novels featuring the private detective Philip Marlowe. In 1973 director by Robert Altman made a movie based of the book, adapted by Leigh Brackett, starring Elliott Gould as Marlowe.
