Spine of jacket rubbed and chipped at ends, small chip to top edge of front panel with some general light edgewear, especially at spine ends. Text block somewhat cocked. First Edition, first printing, with 'here' for 'her' on p29. John Gielgud's copy, with his bookplate to front pastedown. Gielgud's several recordings of Eliot's works over nearly half a century remqain among the very best. The Cocktail Party was first put on at the Edinburgh Festival in 1949 in a production starring with Robert Flemyng, Irene Worth and Alec Guinness. Worth was a close friend of Gielgud's; they recorded a recital of Eliot's 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' in 1983.
