BEEKE, Anthon SKU: 21342

Hilversum, Netherlands: Quadrat-Blätter der Steendrukkerij de Jong & Co., 1970.

Quarto. 30 loose sheet housed in a cardboard portfolio. The "Kwadraat-Blad", a series by Steendrukkerij de Jong & Co, reproduces an alphabet developed by Anthon Beeke, in the form of naked women's bodies, on 30 sheets. The inside cover shows 55 small and one full-page black and white photographs by Ed van der Elsken showing the creation of the photographs that led to the development of the human alphabet. Covers slightly soiled, tips of corners bumped, else very nice and complete condition. The 30 photo-cards reflect the alphabet from A to Z plus punctuation marks (exclamation, question mark, apostrophes, etc.) A weird and wonderfully off-beat demonstration of humanising the letters of the alphabet possibly as an expression of stripping bad language back to its naked and unadulterated form - a type of plain speaking, perhaps. "The Quadrant-Prints are a series of experiments in printing ranging over the fields of graphic design, the plastic arts, literature, architecture and music. They are edited by Peter Brattinga and not for sale".
