Signed with presentation inscription from the author, dated December 1942. No printed publishing date but London Library gives 1942 which would tally with the inscription, perhaps signed at the book's launch or soon after. Original pale blue cloth boards, lower board heavily soiled. Without the dust-jacket. The inscription runs, "For Mr & Mrs Burgess, in remembrances of a happy encounter, from Agnes Grozier Herbertson / December 1942". Author of numerous children's books, plays, and poems, as well as six novels for adults. She was born in Oslo of a Scots, then grew up in Glasgow, later moving and then Cornwall, where she resided with her sister Jessie Leckie Herbertson.
