Know as the "Perthshire Naturalist", McIntosh was born at Inver, near Dunkeld, Scotland, where he was born and spent nearly all his life. He was a keen amateur naturalist, with a particular interest in fungi, and was an active associate member of the Perthshire Society of Natural Science. As gardener to Prince Leopold, the Duke of Buccleuch, and others, he was at the cutting edge of 19th-century horticultural techniques and produced many books about gardening. This book offers expert advice on growing exotic plants in greenhouses, conservatories, orangeries, plant verandahs, etc. and has stunning illustrated plates of some of the more exotic varieties.
