Authors: Alec, WAUGH
Kensington, London: Cayme Press, 1926
First edition. Cloth-backed batik boards with rubbed paper label on spine. Inscribed by the author his close friend and owner of the Cayme Press, Philip Sainsbury, with the latter's armorial bookplate laid down to front pastedown. The inscription on the recto of the first free endpaper, in Waugh's notoriously tiny hand, runs, "To Philip Sainsbury my collaborator in this long, arduous & at time disciplined travail with alec waugh's affectionate regards 27.5.26" Frontispiece of Evelyn Waugh's design for the author's bookplate. Contents somewhat foxed, else a very nice copy. Philip Sainsbury launched the The Cayme Press from his home at 36 Queens Gate Mews, South Kensington in around 1923. Over the next four or five years he produced a range of publications mainly with amusing and / or arcane texts. They were printed on a Columbia press but more ambitious titles were sent out for printing elsewhere. Each bore the famous colophon of an antelope standing atop a fruit bush.
