Reprint of second Macmillan edition having been first published in 1872 in two volumes by Richard Bentley. Violet Leconfield's copy, with her impressive Petworth bookplate laid down to front pastedown, and with a presentation inscription from the author, dated November 1911, to the head of the half-title. 8vo. pp viii, 408. Half-calf, by Truelove & Hanson, binding signed, with raised bands and gilt filets to spine, top edge gilt. A fine copy. Florence Montgomery was born in Chelsea and lived her whole life at the family home in Belgravia, which she shared with two unmarried sisters. She never married, preferring to devote her time to crafting somewhat insipid novels, set in fashionable society, and books for children. Her cousin, Sibyl Montgomery (died 1935), was the first wife of the Marquess of Queensberry and mother of Lord Alfred Douglas. Her best-know book, "Misunderstood" was adapted for film in 1984. Beatrice Violet (née Rawson), Lady Leconfield (1892-1956), married Charles Henry Wyndham in 1911, and spent her married life at Petworth House, Sussex, the seat of the Leconfields.
