BROMLEY-DAVENPORT, WIlliam SKU: 20500 Barcode:
Edition "de luxe" of 250 copies, handsomely bound in polished crimson calf, with ornate gilt tools of a sporting nature, thus hounds, foxes, hunters with guns, geese, huntsmen on horseback, and decorative borders, with turn-ins. A couple of tiny chips, spine slightly rubbed at head and tail. Quarto (28 x 23 cms); pp. [x] + 213; double-spread photographic frontispiece, illustrated title-page, additional rubricated title-page with fox vignette; numerous illustrations, mostly full page, by Lt. General Henry Hope Crealocke. All edges gilt. Inscribed on front endpaper, "Evelyn Boscawen from Charles Frederick, October 1886". Although there is no hard evidence, it is likely the Boscawen mentioned in the inscription is the 6th Viscount Falmouth (1819-89) who was a famed race horse trainer and winner of many Classic races including the Derby in 1870 and 1877 and the St Leger in 1877, 1878, and 1882. A very handsome copy in a superb, gilt decorated binding, executed for the London bookseller's W&G Foyle, with their delaer label laid down at the foot of the rear pastedown.
