Circassia was a country and historical region in the North Caucasus along the northeast shore of the Black Sea. It was conquered and occupied by Russia during the Russian-Circassian War (1763–1864), after which most of the Circassian people were either exiled from the region or massacred in the Circassian genocide. James Bell was a British adventurer and writer who participated in the Russo-Circassian War on the side of the Circassians. Under the cover of establishing commercial relations, he was actually aiding the resistance of the Circassians against the Russian Empire.
