Authors: Thomas Smart, HUGHES (1786-1847)
London: Henry Colburn and Henry Bentley, 1830
Second edition, with considerable additions. Two volumes. 8vo. pp xvi, 511 + xii, 512. Two frontispieces (colour portrait of Sultan Mahmoud and folding map of Albania), two folding plans, 11 plates (six folding), and numerous in-text vignettes. Rebound in later light brown cloth retaining some of the original endpapers, others added, and green title labels on spines. This edition is expanded from the first, enabling the author to "lay before the reader a complete narrative of the the Life and Death of that extraordinary personage Ali Pasha of Ioannina, together with a concise account of the Revolution, in which he bore a distinguished part, and which has given independence to Greece". A tear to the Albania map in vol II has been repaired with Sellotape. Following a distinguished career at Cambridge, Hughes was appointed travelling tutor to Robert Townley Parker, of Cuerden Hall in Lancaster, and in 1813 and 1814 they visited Spain, Italy, Sicily, Greece and Albania. This account of their travels is dedicated to Parker and illustrated with plates from the drawings of CR Cockerell. It is also a primary source of information about Ali Pasha (1740-1822).
