In the latter part of 1869 and into 1870 he ventured from the Polar Sea to the Urals via the four holy shrines of Solovetsk, Pechersk, St. George, and Troitsa. His preoccupation seems to be studying the people and their roles within society, thus he opines on pilgrims, monks and parish priests, about village lore, beggars and itinerants, sectaries, students' revolts and soldiers' grievances.
